Janie Barnett is a Virginia native who cut her teeth at bluegrass festivals, church coffeehouses, and the American Folklife Festival. When she met pioneer John Hartford at Folklife, her love affair with the alternative roots movement began. After a residency on the New England singer-songwriter circuit, Barnett moved to New York City, establishing herself as an artist, and one of the top freelance session singers, working with the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, and Rickie Lee Jones. Janie’s resumé reflects her broad range: Americana artist, singer-for-hire in film and television, and alt-jazz interpreter. In 2023, she released “Under My Skin: Re-imagining Cole Porter,” and “but longing is primal,” a new collection of original songs.
